Yellow Room-3.5 – 4.5 Years
Yellow room enrolments are generally a mixture of children at the younger end of Pre Prep age and those not quite old enough for Prep entry the following year. The program offers a wide range of play-based learning experiences that encourage, support and challenge children to develop a love of learning.
Children participate in teacher-led and child-initiated activities that follow a general routine of indoor and outdoor play activities, language, music group times and rest.
Play experiences are age appropriate and aim to build on literacy and numeracy knowledge, expand abilities, build confidence and enhance social skills. Children in yellow room develop a wide range of essential skills to prepare them for their transition to prep or to the Blue Room.
Yellow Room FAQ’S
Q- What to pack for Kindergarten?
- Backpack – we recommend a regular sized backpack that will be large enough for all of your child’s belongings including lunch, water, snacks, wide brim hat, extra clothing and sheet.
- Water – make sure that you find a good quality medium sized, LEAK-PROOF water bottle that your child can open and close independently.
- Morning Tea and lunch – check out a few handy lunch ideas we have put together.
- Extra set of clothing – this should be packed in a sealed ziplock bag (so that it doesn’t get wet from water spills etc.) with their name on it. Even if your child is fully toilet trained, accidents do happen. There are also water tables and other messy opportunities for your child in their classroom, so this is not just for bathroom accidents.
- Indoor pair of shoes – be sure to label all footwear and clothing that gets sent to kindy, with their name on each shoe.
- I recommend the rule of thumb, “If you want to see it returned home, be sure to label it.”
- No dummies, baby bottles, blankets and pillows will be accepted in any Canossa classroom. Please do not pack any of these items. This will avoid any discomfort for teachers and your child.
Q- Yellow room pick up - drop Off
A- Caregivers are to sign their child/children in and out of the kindy each day on the iPad located in each room or in the foyer. Parents are welcome to join their child for the first 5 minutes of each day while they are settling in.
Important drop off procedures:
1. Please ensure at drop off that you DO NOT LEAVE until an educator has acknowledged your child’s arrival.
2. Please ensure sunscreen has been applied to your child on or before arrival all year round. Each room has a supply of sunscreen for your use. Please make sure you have signed the sunscreen application chart.
Encourage your child to be independent by helping them get used to:
- Putting on and doing up his or her shoes
- Eating and drinking without help (opening lunch boxes, wrapping and unwrapping school lunches and drinking from drink bottles)
- Caring for and putting away playthings
- Using a tissue
- Going to the toilet independently
- Using playground equipment safely
- Carrying his or her own bag and placing into their locker.
- Identifying his or her own belongings
- Walking to their room- We discourage carrying your child to and from their room.
Important pickup procedures:
- Greet your child and ask them about their day. Please allow time for your child to show you what they have done for the day, collect their belongings and check communications pockets. We encourage to do this together.
- Please ensure you DO NOT leave until you have said goodbye to an educator in your room.
- Please ensure that your child DOES NOT play in the playground at pickup.
Q- If my child is upset is it still ok to leave them?
A- If your child clings to you or refuses to participate in the class, don’t get upset — this may only upset your child more. Always say a loving goodbye to your child, but once you do, leave promptly. Don’t sneak out.
A consistent and predictable farewell routine can make leaving easier. Some parents wave from outside the classroom window or make a funny goodbye face, while others have a special handshake before parting.
A couple of handy tips for dealing with anxiety at drop off.
- Attend orientation- Canossa welcomes families for an orientation day. This is an important day for both children and families.
- Work on skills- practice activities they will be doing in class. That includes cutting, glueing, problem-solving and following directions.
- Introduce new friends- Set up play dates with children in your child’s class. Try to branch out beyond children they already know.
- Talk about worries- Talk to your child about any questions or fears she has about starting kindergarten. Explore ways to help your child manage stress.
- Check your own emotions- You may have concerns, but try not to let your own feelings about her starting kindergarten show. Focus on listening and encourage your child.
- Talk to the teacher- Set up a meeting so you can share your concerns and insight. Establish a way to communicate regularly.
- Have a goodbye script – As part of the kindergarten routine, a goodbye script which is something you say to your child every time you leave them at kindy will help them learn when it’s time to say goodbye to the caregiver that you will come back for them. This could be something simple like, “Time to say goodbye. (Teachers name) is going to look after you now until I come back to pick you up. Bye Bye.”
Q- Can I check on my child during the day?
A- You can always call or email our Director at any time during the day to see how your child is going and how they are settling in. The Director will always call you if your child remains upset and at any time during the day they are unsettled.
Q- Do you promote rest time during the day?
A- Yes. Some may sleep, however others who don’t sleep are encouraged to relax and recognise that their bodies need quiet time.
Q-When should I discuss any concerns regarding my child?
A- If you have general questions regarding your child you can discuss at drop off or pick up. If your concern requires a little more time than what is available at drop off and pick up, please send an email to our room to organise a suitable time.

Q-Celebrating Birthdays in the yellow room?
A- At Canossa, we understand it’s a special time for your child to be able to spend their birthday with their kindergarten friends. We have implemented a non-food related celebration to make the day special for your child and their classmates.
Due to a number of allergies and our healthy eating policy, we have implemented a non-food related celebration. This includes:
- – A special birthday card is presented to your child at assembly including a happy birthday sing along.
- – Each child will receive the first letter of their name to decorate with their classmates as a take-home gift from Canossa.
A few key rules for each room are as follows:
- Any birthday party invites are to be placed in the family’s communication pockets located in each classroom.
- No party bags/gifts are to come to kindy.
- No birthday cakes, ice blocks or any food related items.
Q-How to know if my child needs addtional support?
